an alcoholic`s liver swelling is hepatitis and is normally a reversible process,
so damage to the liver (although severe)
is temporary and the liver is capable of regenerating,
if not at least maintaining some degree of function.
The problem is cirrhosis,
when the liver actually shrinks rather than getting inflamed.
unless a person can get a transplant their condition is most likely terminal.
The amount of time they can survive is highly variable,
but chances are it won`t be more than a year (unless they can receive a liver graft or transplant)
